Hanna: Tories cannot be trusted with NHS

SDLP South Belfast MLA and Westminster candidate Claire Hanna has said that papers produced by the Labour Party today show that US pharmaceutical companies are attempting to gain total market access to the NHS as part of a Brexit trade deal. Claire Hanna said that the only way to protect our health service from private sector profiteers is to elect MPs who will vote against it.

She said:

“Our Health Service is the greatest social democratic achievement in modern history anywhere in the world. We have to fight to keep it free at the point of need and free from the influence of privateers seeking to make a profit on the backs of sick people.

“We know that Donald Trump’s administration wants access to our health service for US pharmaceutical companies. Outside of the European Market, the British Government has very little else to offer them as part of the trade deal they’re desperate to sign.

“The documents produced by the Labour Party today reveal that big pharmaceutical companies do indeed want total market access as a baseline for a trade deal. If our health services were truly off the table, as Boris Johnson has suggested, then why are they forming a part of the preparatory discussions between negotiating teams?

“The truth is that no one can trust Boris Johnson. The only way to avoid the wholesale sell off of our health service is to vote for MPs who you can trust to vote against it at Westminster. SDLP MPs will vote to stop Boris Johnson and stop the privatisation of our NHS.”
