Mallon: cross party call to protect people from welfare cliff edge

SDLP Deputy Leader Nichola Mallon MLA has joined a cross party call on Westminster, in the absence of an Asssembly, to legislate to protect low income and disabled families from the looming welfare crisis.

The North Belfast MLA stressed that the best way to protect people is by restoration of a functioning, power-sharing Executive at Stormont and reiterated the SDLP’s call for parties to get back to work.

Ms Mallon added: “There are only 125 days left before welfare mitigations run out and tens of thousands of families are plunged into severe levels of poverty, hunger and homelessness. The best way by far to protect low income and disabled families is by having an Executive and Assembly. We again urge parties to come together and find agreement so we can all get back to work protecting people and tackling the crises right across our public services. The hardship that will hit homes in March 2020 is so severe that we cannot sit back, we must explore all avenues. In September we wrote to the Secretary of State calling for Westminster to act in the absence of an Assembly. We again reiterated that call in a meeting with him yesterday. To further cement that call, we have now signed a cross party letter calling on Westminster to legislate to extend welfare mitigations beyond March 2020".
