Diver welcomes progress on Brandywell

SDLP group leader on Derry City & Strabane District Council Councillor Gerard Diver has welcomed the council’s decision to advance plans for the redevelopment of the Brandywell stadium.

Speaking after the decision was taken at a special council meeting last Friday requested by Councillor Diver, he said:

“After twenty years of false dawns and dashed hopes, we are finally able to proceed to tender for the entire Brandywell stadium capital development, including the construction of a new Greyhound Track. This investment of circa £6.2 million is a very important and positive step, not only for the residents of the Brandywell area, but also those of the wider city and district who will have a facility to be proud of when it’s completed. Council already has planning permission, and hopefully the project will advance in as timely a manner as possible, and cause minimum disruption to potential users. However, unfortunately with any major capital project of this scale, some level of unavoidable disruption is to be expected, but it will all be worth it in the end to have such a facility in our council area.

“The SDLP group understands that the greyhound fraternity in particular have expressed concerns, and as a party we have attempted to address these in various meetings, however it was important to take the project forward rather than risk the loss of vital funding that has been pledged by the Executive. A Brandywell Steering Group composed of various stakeholders will be formed, through which we will hopefully address any outstanding matters. This is a very positive development for sport in our city and district and we look forward to the completion of the work”
