Hanna: Corbyn must stop identifying the problem and start forming the solution

SDLP Brexit Spokesperson Claire Hanna MLA has hit out after reports that Jeremy Corbyn instructed his MPs to reject the EEA amendment coming to the House of Commons. While imperfect, this amendment would effectively allow us to align with the Single Market – which is crucial alongside alignment with the Customs Union to protect the interests of all peoples across these islands.

The MLA for South Belfast said:

“Jeremy Corbyn needs to spell out once and for all if he is committed to protecting Northern Ireland from Brexit because actions speak louder than words.

“As each day passes, and more revelations about the adverse impacts of Brexit comes to the fore, it becomes starkly clear that all of us across these islands must remain within the Single Market and Customs Union to prevent a catastrophic exit that will have an economically destabilising impact on businesses, trade and commerce, north, south, east and west.

“Political leaders across these islands have a responsibility to protect citizens from the socio-economic and political chaos that Brexit will bring. Jeremy Corbyn too must shoulder that responsibility and stop simply identifying the problem and start forming the solution.”
