Hanna: Devolution Must Be Restored to Reject EU Withdrawal Bill
“The Scottish Parliament has refused to give legislative consent to the British Government over the EU Withdrawal Bill – here in Northern Ireland the Assembly should be having its say but people have been left powerless by the DUP and Sinn Féin’s stupid 16 month stalemate.
“Whatever the twists and turns of the period since the last Assembly election, nothing should be elevated beyond protecting people from the impact of Brexit. The Judicial Review on civil service decision making underlines the accountability void here and the impossibility of strategic decisions being made in the interests of people here. We cautioned last year that bringing the Assembly down was the easy bit, restoring it would be harder. DUP and Sinn Féin have checked out of Stormont and are either supporting or giving a free pass to the extreme Brexiters at Westminster.
“We have come to expect no more from the DUP but despite slogans and soundbites, Sinn Fein have left all of us who want to remain in the EU powerless to a British Government and the DUP more empowered than ever before. While Brussels and Dublin are fighting hard to limit the damage of Brexit, the decision to stay in the Single Market can only be made in London. “
“All parties who say they want to restore the institutions need to put their money where their mouths are – we must act to protect the interests of citizens in Northern Ireland, using devolution to ‘take back control."
