Eastwood urges calm following coronavirus confirmation

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has urged people to remain calm and continue to keep hospital appointments in line with medical advice after the Chief Medical Officer confirmed the first case of Coronavirus in Northern Ireland. Mr Eastwood said that the local Health Service has been preparing for Coronavirus testing and that he has full faith in the robust infection control measures that are in place.

He said:

“First of all, I want to thank the health service professionals at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast who are currently working very hard to assess and treat the patient who has been diagnosed with Coronavirus.

“What we know at this point is that the patient travelled from northern Italy to Dublin Airport and then onward to Belfast. I understand that efforts are being made to contact those who travelled with the individual and ensure that they are not also displaying symptoms.

“This is not a time for panic. Robust infection control measures are in place to deal with any cases of novel Coronavirus. I have full faith in the medical staff at the Royal hospital. Those who need to attend the hospital should continue to keep appointments and follow the advice of staff there.”
