McCrossan raises concerns about cuts to Irish medium youth sector

SDLP Education Spokesperson Daniel McCrossan MLA has raised serious concerns about a proposed funding scheme that would deliver cuts to Irish medium youth sector organisations.

At a meeting of the Stormont Education Committee today, Mr McCrossan said that plans to remove a small funding stream for Irish language local youth groups would be incredible given that the Assembly was in quasi-suspension for three years over similar issues.

Daniel McCrossan MLA said:

“It is deeply concerning that after three years of having the Assembly in hiatus over what amounted to a political disagreement on an Irish Language Act, that as we return it appears that Irish medium youth sector organisations are facing cuts which will critically inhibit their ability to operate.

“The Education Committee heard evidence today about a new EA funding scheme for regional voluntary youth organisations. During that discussion it became clear that a previous small funding scheme for local Irish language youth groups would not transition into the new funding model. Given the significant work that has gone into establishing a vibrant Irish medium youth sector over the last number of years, it is incredible that the new funding model seeks to undermine the progress that has been made.

“The SDLP will push back on these plans. The youth sector has been doing incredible work, particularly during the Covid-19 crisis, to support young people from every background. It is disgraceful that organisations working around the clock to provide critical services are being made to feel like they aren’t valued. I will be seeking an explanation from the Education Authority and the Minister about this.”
