McCrossan welcomes belated launch of £11.2m Engage Programme

SDLP Education Spokesperson, Daniel McCrossan MLA has welcomed the launch of a major programme aimed at addressing the impact of COVID-19 on children’s learning.

The West Tyrone MLA commented:

“It is welcome that the Minister for Education has announced an £11.2million investment, the Engage programme, to try and redress educational inequalities, exacerbated by the pandemic.”

“However given this funding was agreed in June, it is deeply disappointing that the money is only released now, in September. If the Minister had of acted sooner, there could have been months of summer learning. This is a missed opportunity.”

“I have been deeply concerned about how months of lost learning will impact on our children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is welcome that the Minister has eventually recognised this issue and invested in the Engage programme, which will provide vital assistance to schools as they seek to address the needs of children and young people.”

“Schools continue to remain under huge pressure and it is essential that the Minister engages with our educational leaders and provides them with the support they deserve and require.”

“The issue of inequality must be kept under constant review and the Minister should be prepared to act swiftly to ensure that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds do not bear the brunt of the pandemic.”
