McCrossan welcomes extra funds for education

SDLP Education spokesperson, Daniel McCrossan MLA has welcomed January monitoring allocation and announcement of an extra £33 million for the education system.

The West Tyrone MLA said:

“I welcome the announcement of a combined £33 million investment in the education system by Finance Minister, Conor Murphy MLA.”

“These reallocations include an extra £10 million to ensure children with Special Educational Needs get the support they need, helping to clear the long backlogs in diagnosis and assessments.”

“The Minister also made funding available to provide a long overdue increase in teachers’ pay, something the SDLP has long campaigned for. These monies also include £4 million to support our Further Education colleges.”

“While this money is a drop in the ocean compared to what is required to tackle the crisis in education, this additional support is very welcome and will help to address some of the immediate pressures.”

“I will continue to engage with the Executive and colleagues on the Education Committee to continue to tackle the challenges in our system, so our young people can receive a high quality education.”
