Attwood: Proposal for 11% cut in the budget of Neighbourhood Renewal projects is unacceptable

Belfast Cllr Tim Attwood has said a proposal from Department for Communities to cut Neighbourhood Renewal by 11% is unacceptable. In 2008/09 the Neighbourhood Renewal Budget was £24/25 million today its around £18 million.

Cllr Tim Attwood said:

“I understand the Department for Communities has informed community groups that there will be a 11% cut in Neighbourhood Renewal. This is completely unacceptable.

“Neighbourhood Renewal is meant to be the flagship programme to tackle poverty and disadvantage. Now there is an attempt by DFC to completely undermine this important programme.

“Let’s be clear, if these cuts are implemented it means some front line organisations will close and important services helping the most vulnerable in our society will be lost. We will be working with community organisations to oppose these cuts and call on DFC to reverse this decision.”
