Co-opted onto Magherafelt Council in 2014, Martin won a seat on the new Mid Ulster super council in May 2014. Martin Kearney currently serves the Sperrin DEA.
Having lived all his life in Glenone, Portglenone, Cllr Kearney is a retired Primary School Principal, teaching for 33 years at St. Mary’s P.S. Harryville, Ballymena.
Martin joined the SDLP over 30 years ago as a member of the Clady/Ballynease/Bellaghy Branch, initially acting as Treasurer. Since then he has held many posts within the party, the most recent being member of the party’s Agricultural Sub-Committee and Chairman of the Mid-Ulster Constituency Council.
Martin is Secretary of Roger Casement’s GAC Portglenone; Director of Portglenone Enterprise Group and Glenone Business Park; Member of the Board of Governors of St. Mary’s College, Clady and St. McNissi’s P.S. Tannaghmore; Member of Greenlough Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Safeguarding Representative; Judge of the National Teaching Awards; Past member of the BBC Educational Council and Past Chairman of Bannvale Credit Union.
